There are tons of ways to make a living from home writing. Some will pay better than others. You will most likely want to do a combination of methods.

Paid Writing/Posting/Blogging Sites:
There are sites that pay you to post articles, blog entries, and even forum posts. Most of these pay very poorly unless you are HIGHLY read by tons of people. But they do pay something. Sites like this would include:

Helium.com
MyLot.com
SoulCast.com

Just to name a few.

Social Networks:
There are social networks that pay you to join, make friends, blog, write, and in general participate. Some of these sites include:

Yuwie.com
Zenzuu.com

Kandzoo.com

Medical, Legal and General Transcription:
There are a lot of legitimate companies out there who will pay very fast typists for transcription services. Many of them, especially medical and legal, require various types of formal education. There are also a lot of general transcription jobs in the television industry transcribing interviews, news reports and the like not only for viewer who request transcriptions of a program but also closed caption for the hearing impaired. Finally, if you speak English and are fluent in a second language, there is a lot demand for translation/transcription services.

I've written a lot about this field and listed a lot of companies that hire for these positions. More information can be found at http://wahcenter.blogspot.com/search/label/Transcription%2FCoding

Blogging:
You can make money blogging in a few ways. First, there are the paid blogging networks mentioned above. Second, you can create your own blog and earn advertising revenue from a long list of methods. (For details on how to make money from your own blog, you are welcome visit my Blog Guide http://blog-guide.blogspot.com ). Finally, you can get a telecommute job blogging for someone. I occassionally post blogging jobs on my above mentioned Blog Guide, but I also recommend you check out blogging jobs websites such as http://performancing.com/forum/326 or http://bloggerjobs.biz/ .

Freelance Writing:
If you are skilled at non fiction article writing, there is money to made freelance writing in just about any niche you can think of. Write for newspapers, magazines, ezines, and any other type of publication you can think of. You can also find jobs as a ghostwriter if you don't mind taking instruction from someone else on what to write and how to do it.

Writing for Sale:
There are tons of written product out there for sale from traditional books to eBooks. You can create your written products for sale.

Writing Jobs:
Sometimes newspapers and magazines will hire writers and allow them to telecommute. I will occassionally run across jobs like this and post them here:

Niche Writing Business:
If you are skilled at writing in a specific way you might be able to create a niche writing business where you sell your writing skills directly or create products involving your writing. For example: A Resume writing Business, Copywriting, EBooks, Greeting Cards, Documents, etc.

Freelance Greeting Cards:
You can actually create greeting cards and sell the design to greeting card companies. This might involve some design skills too, it depends on the company.

Virtual Assistant:
Virtual assistants offer all kinds of office/administrative/clerical types of services some of that would include writing articles, ads, letters, data entry, etc. If you have a experience in a specific industry, real estate, law, doctors offices, etc. you might be able to market niche services to small businesses in that specific industry.

I'm sure there are more ways to earn money writing, but this is a good overview of the opportunities out there.
